Volunteer Position

From Member Jim Paradis:

I am treasurer for the Learning Disabilities Association of British Columbia – Fraser South Chapter.

The Learning Disabilities Association of BC – Fraser South Chapter (LDAFS) is a not-for-profit organization that has been providing programs and services to individuals with learning disabilities for over 30 years. Our Resource Centre is located in Surrey, British Columbia, however, our chapter serves the communities of the South Fraser region, including Surrey, Delta, Langley, Abbotsford, and White Rock.  www.ldafs.org <http://www.ldafs.org>

Their mission is “to advance the education, employment, social development, legal rights, and general well-being of people with learning disabilities (LD)”.  Our purpose is “to promote early recognition, diagnosis and treatment of learning disabilities, and to develop or sponsor appropriate programs and resources for the benefit of people with learning disabilities and/or their families”.

LDAFS provides programs and services for people with learning disabilities and/or their families.  These include remedial, academic and social programs for youth, parent workshops, information seminars, a resource centre, a lending library, parent information packages, community outreach, and support and referrals through our family resource coordinator.

The majority of their focus is to provide needed programs to children with Learning Disabilities.

The Executive meet once a month to review the financial statements and conduct its business. There is usually not much work to do during the month as they have a bookkeeper who handles all of the finances.  The role of the treasurer is simply to review the financial statements and provide whatever advice and guidance is necessary for the Association to meet their mandate.

I have been doing it for four or five years and it is time for me to hand it over to someone else.
